Abandoned and destined to be sunk in a port in Singapore, Karaka was claimed for $1 by a whimsical traveler named Tom. Now a seasoned seafarer, Tom has been sailing it around the world for the past 10 years with a rotating deck of hands.
I found Tom on Couchsurfing and hitchhiked from the airport to the location off the coast of Teahupo’o he roughly outlined in a message. I saw what looked like the right boat, entrusted my bag to a girl selling sandwiches by the side of the road, and swam from the coast to the boat. Luckily, it was the right boat and I spent the next 2 weeks helping Tom refinish the deck while snorkeling, kayaking, and sleeping under the stars.
