Turtles found me in a part of time, a slice of space, and a state of mind far from where I am now, on this bench. In fact, she found me on her couch. I had just returned to Australia from a whirlwind detour through the South Pacific on my way to and from my own place of birth. That journey made a deep impression on me as well and I hope to share it with you someday. For now, I will continue my Turtle trail. Upon reentering Australia, I had to choose an airport. I chose Cairns, another place of birth for me in certain ways. I rocked up to the house of my gypsy family, completely unannounced, full of gifts, stories, and the anticipation of reunion. I found the house completely empty, dark, and quiet, not even Rollie the dog was there. This was the first time I had ever seen the house like this. Usually, there were always people there, drawing, cooking, singing, dancing with fire, or smoking on the stoop. I came up with a million and one explanations for the stillness and the shadows that currently gripped the house while I drifted off to sleep on the couch. The next morning, Turtles found me there. We had never met before and I had the challenge of explaining why I was sleeping on her couch.

It wasn't too difficult to explain myself. Turtles is a drifter in her own way. She was helping to look after the house while Amy & Paddy, our friends whom the house belongs to, returned to their own place of birth for the unexpected death of a dear friend. That explains the shadows. Turtles and I, with the help of our friends Genevieve and Jackie breathed life back into the house. We sang, danced, cooked, cleaned, and redecorated until every shadow dissolved into warmth and welcome. The couch where Turtles found me folded out into a bed and we began sharing it.
