"We were out fishin' too long, and by the time we come back, the tide has gone out and the bank is fulla crocs. There was nothin' we could do. We just hadta kill time in our little dingy till the water came back up." Alex Downey obligingly regales me with stories of his fishing and pig hunting that fills the days between his week-on week-off mining schedule. We sweep through cotton field after cotton field, estimating how much each bail was worth, "Generally 'roun' $10,000." The last town along the main highway before the turnoff for Alex's mine is Nyngan. I jump out, give Alex a grateful farewell, and head to Nyngan's main "servo" (Aussie for "gas station") on the outskirts of town.
