Turtles and I spent nearly 2 weeks together, and I was completely out of money from the start. We had been dumpster diving together for our food, she had treated me to a coffee every other day or so, and she had even paid for a big night out on the town together. I was grateful for her generosity but didn't want to be a burden. I needed a job. With only 9 months total in Australia, I felt the desire to explore other parts of the country besides my treasured Cairns. I had set my sights on pearl farming in Broome and intended to hitchhike there. Each day when I woke up, I would search within myself to see if that was the right day to leave for Broome. Turtles and I never labeled the relationship we had; us drifters avoid anything in our lives that indicate certainty or predictability. Still, whatever relationship we were sharing was making it hard for me to pull the trigger and hit the road for Broome.
